What is BHO?
BHO (butane hash oil) is a cannabis concentrate made by using butane gas as a solvent to separate the resin from the plant. It's one of the most potent concentrates there's.
The butane carries away the cannabinoids and terpenes found in the trichomes, the tiny glands that cover the buds. The solvent is then removed, and what is left is a highly concentrated resin.
It's a very different product from the bud: a tiny amount contains a lot of THC, so its effect is much more intense.
Making it's dangerous
Butane is a highly flammable gas. Attempts to make BHO at home have caused explosions, fires and serious burns: the gas builds up in the air and a single spark, like the one from a light switch, a fridge or a lighter, is enough to set it off. Don't try it at home under any circumstances.
On top of that, if the solvent isn't removed properly, the final product can contain traces of butane. Where it's legal, it's made by laboratories with closed equipment and specific safety measures.
Forms of BHO
Depending on its final texture, it goes by different names:
- Shatter: a hard, translucent sheet, like hard candy, that breaks like glass.
- Wax: opaque and soft.
- Budder: creamy, similar to butter.
- Oil: a thick liquid.
BHO, hash and rosin
All three are concentrates of cannabis resin. Hash and rosin are made without solvents; BHO, on the other hand, needs a flammable gas, and that is the big difference.
